The investment will focus on strengthening Amazon Web Services (AWS) in Singapore, addressing the increasing customer demand for cloud solutions and accelerating AI adoption. AWS, known for providing software and data storage services from extensive server farms, is expanding its presence beyond the United States with a strategic focus on Asia.
Amazon’s investment in Singapore is part of a broader strategy to expand its footprint in Asia, aligning with similar moves by tech giants like Microsoft Corp. and Apple Inc. This expansion also serves as a diversification strategy away from China and a response to geopolitical tensions between China and the U.S.
Including the investment in Singapore, AWS has outlined plans to invest approximately $35 billion outside the U.S. this year, targeting markets such as Japan, Saudi Arabia, and Mexico. Additionally, Amazon is establishing data center clusters in Malaysia and Thailand.
Last month, Amazon announced that AWS is on track to surpass $100 billion in annual sales for the first time, driven by enterprise technology modernization and increasing demand for AI services. This significant investment announcement was made during the ASEAN-AWS Summit in Singapore, underscoring the strategic importance of the region for AWS expansion and AI initiatives.
Amazon anticipates that this investment plan will create an average of 12,300 jobs in Singapore annually. The company also plans to conduct workshops for more than 100 businesses over the next two years in partnership with the Singapore government to empower small enterprises with generative AI capabilities.
