Will Xi Jinping and Joe Biden Meet at the APEC Summit. United States (US) National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in their meeting in Malta on September 16-17 2023 discussed various matters, including the possibility of meeting the two leaders in San Francisco.
The meeting between Sullivan and Yi was held to ensure that US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping were ready to meet at the APEC Summit in San Francisco in November 2023.
Both parties are now known to have an interest in stabilizing relations. China’s leaders are focused on the country’s economic decline. Meanwhile, the US leader hopes to stabilize relations ahead of the 2024 Presidential election.
However, the chances of fundamental improvements in the relationship are considered small, given that the overall condition of US-China relations remains tense.
The meeting in Malta comes at a critical moment in relations between the two countries. This week, Wang is scheduled to visit Moscow for talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
Meanwhile, other world leaders and their aides are heading to New York to attend the UN General Assembly. Wang and Xi did not attend the agenda.
According to sources, Sullivan and Wang in the meeting discussed high-level engagement and were committed to holding consultations on political and security developments in the Asia Pacific, maritime issues, arms control and policy planning consultations.
These discussions will take place in the coming months. China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs also made a similar statement.
