Tesla Stock Jumps After Robotaxi Launch

Tesla (TSLA) surged more than 8% on Monday and gained an additional 2% in pre-market trading Tuesday, fueled by excitement over the company’s highly anticipated robotaxi pilot program launch. The move marks Tesla’s first real-world deployment of autonomous ride services — a milestone years in the making. However, market reaction suggests that while the rollout made headlines, it may not yet move the needle on Tesla’s revenue or long-term valuation.

The pilot, launched on Sunday, featured just 10 robotaxi vehicles operating in a geofenced area of Austin, Texas. The rides were automated but monitored remotely by safety personnel, and the passengers were handpicked influencers, chosen to help amplify Tesla’s publicity push. CEO Elon Musk praised the effort, calling it a success for Tesla’s AI chip and software teams, both built in-house.

Despite the modest scale of the rollout, Tesla stock rallied as traders welcomed tangible progress in the company’s push toward autonomous driving and AI integration. Yet analysts caution that this was more of a PR milestone than a transformative commercial step. “Proof of concept” has finally been demonstrated, but ten cars in a controlled test zone don’t yet justify long-term bullish projections — especially when the path to full-scale robotaxi adoption remains complex.

Tesla’s share price had already been climbing — up more than 40% since October, when Musk last promoted Tesla’s AI and robotaxi roadmap. Much of the current valuation, which tops $1 trillion, hinges on the belief that Tesla will be a leader in AI-driven mobility. But that belief comes with risk: if Tesla fails to deliver a scalable, profitable autonomy solution, its valuation could quickly appear overstretched.

For now, Wall Street is rewarding Tesla for finally putting a real-world version of its robotaxi vision on the streets. But beneath the fanfare, serious regulatory, technological, and logistical challenges remain. Until those are addressed, the robotaxi dream remains a compelling story — but not yet a business model.
